Francis Lee Jaques (pronounced jay-kweez - rhymes with squeeze) moved to a farm near the Mississippi River in rural Aitkin in 1904 when he was 15 years old. In Aitkin, Jaques began his career as a self-taught artist depicting wildlife and outdoor scenes in addition to being a taxidermist, railroad fireman, farmer and logger. Francis Lee Jaques emerged from rural Minnesota in the 1930s and 40s to become a nationally known wildlife artist. After two decades at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, he returned to his home state to paint a much-loved series of habitat dioramas at the University of Minnesota’s Bell Museum. FRANCIS LEE JAQUES (1887 - 1969) Mr. Jaques traveled many miles during his career as an artist, but probably the longest journey, subjectively speaking, was one be took as a boy, when he had no idea he'd ever become a painter. Best known for the distinctive style of his dioramas at the American Museum of Natural History adn other museums, Francis Lee Jaques was also a painter and illustrator whose elegant black-and-white drawings appeared in over 30 books about wildlife adn nature.
